the-city
The body. The mind. The city that never sleeps. The delicate balance of these three components forms the cutting edge concept that embodies Bari Studio. At Bari we aren’t just looking to give you the best possible workout (although we WILL) - we are providing you with an experience. Every detail of this studio serves a purpose, from the artwork on the walls to the NY tap water flowing into eco-friendly bottles for our hard-working clients. The exposed brick walls scream New York City while our handcrafted, recycled wood lockers remind you to be good to the environment. Oh, and don’t be fooled by that ballet barre. We’re not cute. Like every good New Yorker, we have an edge.
So allow me to give you a little tour…
THE TRIBE WALL - a never-ending work in progress…
Artist-In-Residence Chris Choi’s grafitti painting (we don’t have a name for her yet - feel free to send us some suggestions) is the first thing you see when you walk into Bari. Chris’ art is all over the studio (and will be through the Spring) - we can’t get enough of it. His style brings all of our elements together - his work is beautiful and edgy; fun and borderline crazy (sounds like a Bari workout?). Chris - thanks for being a part of the Tribe.
Tips on the Mind, Body and City - read them, talk about them, send us some suggestions, add your own. But most importantly - use them! We do the research so you don’t have to. Working out is only one piece of the puzzle, so add these aspects to help you achieve your ultimate goal, whatever that may be for you.
A music center with an iPod loaded with original music by local NYC artists (mostly independent) - placed at a height friendly for your kids too - and a song request blackboard. Request some songs, we’ll play them in class.
OUR LOCKERS
I know sometimes we laugh about the things we’re excited about here at Bari. Yes, we’re crazy about our bathroom and changing room, yes, we say ‘LOVE’ way too often, and yes, we touch our lockers every time we walk pass them… But there’s a good reason for that.
Our lockers were designed and handmade by WoodLab, a small wood shop in 3rd Ward in Brooklyn. When I say handmade, I mean piece by piece, slab by slab, drawn, cut, finished and assembled.
Our guys at WoodLab used Recycled Douglas Fir from a dismantled barn in the Hudson Valley, American Black Walnut from Upstate New York, natural wax and vegetable oils. As they said when they brought them in “more than 72 hours of sweat and grease and worth every second of it.”
DOWNSTAIRS
Our grappling mats are where our Budokon class (including the kids) can grapple, punch and kick… We have a tiny kitchen where we mostly just have fun dehydrating vegetables, brewing kombucha, trying out different recipes… And there’s our Zen garden just outside of our yoga room downstairs, where we have already started creating a space we’ll be able to enjoy this spring and summer - BBQs? Cocktails? Even night yoga classes? We got it covered.
THE WORKOUT
You have to come try it out yourself. Explaining an exact Bari class is almost impossible, because they’re all different, but we can give you the gist: we lunge, we crunch, we plyo, we sweat, we crunch some more, we push up… did we mention we sweat? A full body workout, a Bari class will fly by. A lot of people confuse us for another barre class… and we’re not surprised. Yes, we use a barre. We use a barre to get higher in our jumps and kicks and lower in our lunges and squats and we use a barre to get to those waist muscles you can’t get to from the floor (we call them barre crunches). We do cardio and plyometrics in every class getting quicker and lighter every time we Bari. We do long abs and proximal abs to hit our abdominal wall from the inside to the surface. We do 32 push ups in every class, we plank, we downward dog, and we plank some more.
So basically, what we’re trying to say, is that the workout is awesome. You’ll look great, yes, but most importantly you will feel amazing. You’ll feel lighter, stronger, quicker, leaner and overall plain old happy… Stay tuned into the Bari Tribe, we’ll post more details about the workout often.
