We love results at Bari.

Results make you happy, and it makes us happy when you’re happy. Results are a big part of the reason our company and method exists. Even when people come to Bari with no intentions of changing their bodies we know we’re offering a workout that delivers, whether you ask it to or not.

As we near our two year mark, we can confidently say: Bari has a type. There is no mistaking a #BariBODY when we’ve transformed one. At this point, our method is tried and true, and our Tribe is living proof of what we create in the classroom.

So, what is a #BariBODY?

Let’s get technical for a minute. Or 10 minutes, depending on how fast you read. In the sci-fit (or science-fitness) world, body shapes are classified as somatotypes: endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph.

Different somatotypes will excel at certain activities and perform poorly in others. Because most people are unaware of their natural somatotypes, people often choose activities that create negative results for their body type. For example, if you are a male ectomorph and you try to jump into some form of super intense exercise, you might be increasing your likelihood of injury. If you are a female endomorph and are spinning uphill sprints daily, you might be prone to developing unwanted larger leg muscles.

At Bari, we have focused our research on creating a workout that benefits all somatotypes and defies the notion that you are stuck with a body you don’t love. See: #BariBODY.

Let’s dig into what a #BariBODY is not:

It’s not a ballerina’s body. Yes, we dance, and we LOVE to dance. But our movement is a little more athletic — think switch lunges instead of pirouettes. As you might expect, this results in a sculpted body with a few more curves — and definitely a little more butt (see: Melinda) — than what you’d expect from a ballerina.

It’s not a body builder’s body. Our body therapist, Yeri, always comments on how she’s so shocked every time she massages a Triber. On the surface, we don’t look “ripped.” But once she touches our muscles, it’s indisputable how strong we are. Allow us a moment to toot our own horns. We are strong — just not in the bulging muscle sort of way. How does strong come in so many different shapes and sizes? Muscle hypertrophy is the increasing of skeletal muscle cells, which creates a larger-appearing muscle. This is the focus for bodybuilders and is generally achieved by isolating muscles with low repetition and heavyweight movements.

Bari was created to provide healthy strength gains, but without the resulting appearance of large muscles. We don’t think large muscles are bad (we love you in 300, Gerard Butler), it’s simply not the type of body Bari creates. To limit bulk, we limit how much each muscle is isolated and vary the angles in which muscles are targeted. We create defined muscles that look slim to the eye but are incredibly strong. We use our body weight for stability and bone density creation, but not for ‘you can see my cuts through my shirt’ muscle building.

It’s not a spinner’s body. We don’t work our hip joints in the same forward motion, and we don’t use our thighs or hamstrings the way you do on a bike. We create long, lean legs so that the bigger muscle groups are proportionately worked with the rest of the body.

It’s not a runner’s body. Running yields a high calorie burn, but works the same muscles over and over again. At Bari, our sensory cardio spikes the heart rate — resulting in that sought-after high-calorie burn — and dynamically targets our many lower-body muscles. We work in the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes using triplanar movement in almost everything we do. Different muscles are involved in different ways through each plane of movement, which keeps each plane of motion and the corresponding muscles balanced in strength, endurance and flexibility. These side-to-sides, diagonals, twists and turns target the leg muscles from more intricate angles and produce the ultimate result.

It’s not a bootcamper’s body. We don’t lift crazy weights or burpee and plank just to spike our heart rates. We focus on functionality. We exercise your body with the intent of helping you to walk easier, maintain postural integrity and most importantly, promote longevity. We create sequences that methodically exhaust muscles so that we can sculpt them to perfection.

And now, we’re turning it over to you, dear Tribe.

Every time you check yourself out in the mirror, or catch your silhouette on a NYC wall - snap a picture and tag your #BariBODY. Every time you wear a bikini and you’re proud of your long lost “trouble areas,” take a picture and tag it. We’re excited to take it up a notch and start documenting our reason to believe: the #BariBODY.

Want to keep it anonymous? We don’t understand why (really, you look awesome), but send us the picture, and we’ll post it for you without naming names.
